Mindfulness

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally.” -Jon Kabat-Zinn

Mindfulness can be a very useful addition to traditional talk therapy. Mindfulness is a technique that with practice can help us remain present in our lives. Most of our thought energy is focused on ruminating about the past or worrying about the future...all the while our life slips by.

Most moments of our lives, if taken as they are, are pleasant. Take this moment right now, as you are reading this. You are breathing in and out; your eyes, brain and hands are working;  you are likely not unbearably hot or cold or in pain (although mindfulness works for pain as well.) Just take a moment to pay attention to your breath and you may find that just breathing in and out is a pleasant experience. Our pain stems from oftentimes irrational thoughts that take us out of the present moment and cause negative emotions to arise.

Using mindfulness techniques within psychotherapy can enhance ones ability to self soothe, regain control over runaway emotions and reconnect with the simple pleasures in life...the greatest pleasures of all.
