Identifying as a gay man or lesbian often comes with unique challenges. Fears of social rejection, a lack of genuine self-acceptance and issues around coming out can lead to feelings of isolation, depression or anxiety. Gay and lesbian couples also have specific relationship needs that can be explored in therapy. I have specific skills in helping to uncover and explore underlying issues that may be negatively affecting gay and lesbian couples.
Couples Counseling/ Marriage Counseling/ Relationship Issues
Sometimes relationship stress can seem overwhelming, frustrating and even hopeless but there is help. When an important relationship in your life is in turmoil it can be hard to think about anything else. Therapy provides an outside perspective to help identify the underlying cause of conflict and unhealthy communication patterns that may be creating distance between couples. Any couple who is willing to honestly explore themselves, open the lines of communication and work toward finding a deeper connection with one another can benefit from couples or marriage counseling. Relationship issues can also be explored in individual therapy.
Depression and Anxiety
Depression and Anxiety are a very common human condition. You do not have to continue living a life filled with fear, worry and unhappiness. You are born with all of the tools you need to find happiness; you just have to know where to look. I offer the warmth and support you need during this difficult time. At the same time I will challenge you to identify unhealthy patterns and find your path to happiness. You can take control over your life from feelings and behaviors that seem unmanageable. You have the power to make positive changes and reclaim your life from depression and anxiety. I can help.
Having a new baby can dramatically change the lives of your whole family and the way you interact with one another. Feelings of depression are very common after giving birth and can oftentimes last well into the first year of your baby's life. Sometimes the changes that occur and the resulting feelings can be overwhelming, especially for overworked, overtired parents. Dr. Bernstein can help you sort out these feelings and improve communication within the family.
Oftentimes issues with weight goes much deeper than simply diet and exercise. The way we feel and underlying emotions that have been avoided can come out in unhealthy eating habits. I can help you sort out your emotions and learn to identify and control emotions that lead to unhealthy emotional eating.
